Hi everyone! Thanks for stopping by Chronicles of a Dietitian!
My name is Jackie and I am a Washington, DC-based registered dietitian and total foodie! I love to eat, cook, try new restaurants, and talk about food. I think it is fair to say that healthy, delicious food is almost all I think about!
About Chronicles of a Dietitian
I created this blog in the fall of 2013 for two reasons:
1. I want to show people that healthy food is DELICIOUS. I used to work for a company that provided nutrition education in office buildings. Many people I that came across at work knew they should eat more healthfully  but told me they did not like healthy food. I offered customers a free sample of a Sage and Butternut Squash Quinoa Salad and was turned down because “it looks too healthy.” In my opinion, these people just haven’t truly tried good food. Give me a plain baked chicken breast and unseasoned Brussels sprouts, I might agree with you. But roast the chicken and sprouts with a bit of olive oil, cumin, salt, and black pepper and I’m sold!
2. I want to show people that dietitians really do love food! We are not the “food police” or “nutrition nazis.” I hope to share all my passion for food and knowledge of nutrition but if that’s not what you’re looking for, I’m not going to force you to listen to me. If you are interested in good, healthy food, well then this is the blog for you!
About Me
Family at Alex's Graduation
I fell in love with cooking the summer after college. I didn’t have a job right after graduation, so I spent nearly every day over the next few months trying out new recipes for my family and friends. I loved that food was so versatile and that there wasn’t really a science to cooking, unlike baking (really, who has time for measuring cups?)!
After working the next year as a diet clerk in a hospital, I enrolled in the Master of Public Health program in Nutrition at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. I had such a good experience and made some amazing friends. I also realized how many facets there were to nutrition! It is not just about weight loss and healthy eating. We learned all about food insecurity, food policy, and positions for dietitians outside of the hospital.
UNC Public Health Alumni
Once I graduated from UNC, I moved back to DC and began working for a food service contractor in Maryland. I worked with the chefs, analyzed menus and recipes, and learned so much more about food and recipe development. This is probably when food and nutrition took over my life! It is also when I started this blog :)
Great Falls Hike
Now, I manage programs that provide food and meals to older adults in DC. It is a super rewarding position! In my spare time, I love cooking for anyone who will give me a chance, dining at new restaurants, hiking and enjoy a sunny day outside, and cheering on the Washington Redskin, Capitals, UVA, and UNC!
